Matthieu Ricard

 Matthieu Ricard: Habits of happiness

TEDtalksDirector | 15 aprile 2008

http://www.ted.com What is happiness, and how can we all get some? Buddhist monk, photographer and author Matthieu Ricard has devoted his life to these questions, and his answer is influenced by his faith as well as by his scientific turn of mind: We can train our minds in habits of happiness. Interwoven with his talk are stunning photographs of the Himalayas and of his spiritual community.

The Autobiography of a Tibetan Yogin, Snow Lion Publications, 2001, e The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones, The Practice of View, Meditation, and Action, Boston, Shambhala Publications, 1993.

Le sue Fotografie sono state esposte a New York, Paris, Perpignan, Winthertur, Stockholm e Hong-Kong.

Large Hadron Rap

Rappin‘ about CERN’s Large Hadron Collider! Links below…

Apparently YouTube fixed the sound! Still, Will Barras made two options trying to get around the original problems:
Other YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3iryBLZCOQ
Vimeo: http://www.vimeo.com/1431471?pg=embed&sec=1431471

Vimeo is downloadable if you log in.

There has been a lot of interest in the original mp3, lyrics, and vocals for remixing. You can find all that here:
https://www.msu.edu/~mcalpin9/lhc_rap/largehadron.html

There’s also been interest in translation. You can get a subtitle-free version from Vimeo here (downloadable):
http://www.vimeo.com/1730771

With backing track available here (with and without Hawking-style voice):
http://barras.ws/rappin.html

Go ahead and translate, rap it, and post it! Just give us a shout-out, and it’s probably a good idea to include the following credits ;-)

Images came from:
particlephysics.ac.uk, space.com, the Institute of Physics, NASA, Symmetry, and Marvel

I forgot Einstein Online, and they called me out: http://www.einstein-online.info

And I forgot Physics World (dunno what I was thinking when I put together the extra dimensions bit). Steve Abel set me to rights (but made no demands): http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/print/403

The talented dancers doubled as camera people, with some work by Neil Dixon. Stock footage is CERN’s.

Will Barras is responsible for the killa beats:

And thanks to MC Hawking, who first thought of using computer-voice to bring Stephen Hawking to the world of rap :-)

Dalai Lama still prays for his “Chinese brothers and sisters” every morning and urges Tibetans to learn Chinese

BUT, as writes, also, Bhikkhu Kamachi (DLTP group - Dalai Lama Tibet Project in Second Life)

Midday, 21MAR08 (Sydney):

The latest reports from Tibet today are that thousands of troops are moving into Tibet and the bordering Chinese provinces in what is feared to be the first stage of a Tianenmen Sq.-style repression.

Activist groups worldwide have pleaded with the UN to intervene but, as a permanent member of the UN, China can veto any action proposed by that body.

Now, concerned citizens around the world are asking the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to apply pressure on the Chinese authorities. It is hoped that China (host of this years Olympic Games) will be more sensitive to condemnations from nations that are planning to participate in the Olympics.
Countries with strong trade links to China are also being asked to intervene and remind China that these actions could damage their very profitable ‘Made In China’ brands.

After decades of repression, Tibetans are crying out to the world for freedom and independence.
China’s leaders are, at this very moment, making a crucial choice between escalating the brutality or dialogue that could determine the future of Tibet and China.

We can have an affect on this historic choice by signing an online petition that is aiming for one million signatures.

Right now (at 6pm 20MAR08 in Second Life) there are 461,000 signatures on that petition.

Let your voice be heard:

Since China wants to join the world community,” the 14th Dalai Lama said as I was traveling across Japan with him for a week last November, “the world community has a real responsibility to bring China into the mainstream.” The whole world stands to gain, he pointed out, from a peaceful and unified China—not least the 6 million Tibetans in China and Chinese-occupied Tibet. “But,” he added, “genuine harmony must come from the heart. It cannot come from the barrel of a gun.

—the Dalai Lama still prays for his “Chinese brothers and sisters” every morning and urges Tibetans to learn Chinese so they can talk with their new rulers, not fight with them—

The Buddha was a “scientist,” he said the last time I saw him, which means that a true Buddhist should follow the course of reason (recalling, perhaps, that anger most harms the person who feels it). Contact and communication are the methods he always stresses—to this day, he encourages every possibility for dialogue with China and in places even urges Tibetans to study Buddhism under Chinese leaders whom he knows to be capable.

Le Mind and Life Conferences

But Second Life is more than just that. And: Thus begins the education of China's 137 million Netizens into the ways of 3-D virtual words (Newsweek)

In a few short years, Second Life has grown from an experiment to the world's largest virtual universe. Inside the mind of its founder.

By Jessica Bennett
Newsweek International

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19878950/site/newsweek/

July 30, 2007 issue - Fake worlds have long served as an escape from reality for the socially inept geeks of the real world. But Second Life is more than just that. Whereas the likes of the hit '80s board game Dungeons and Dragons and the Internet's World of Warcraft provided fantasy for gamers, Second Life creeps much closer to reality. At once a 3-D social networking site, a place for would-be entrepreneurs to do business (and make real money), and a forum for conducting scientific and medical research, it has now attracted the attention of multinational corporations seizing the opportunity to translate virtual money into cold cash. As a result, Second Life is blurring the boundaries between the virtual world and the real one.

China's answer to Second Life is in the works, but facescensors and other hurdles its American rival never will.

By Jonathan Adams
Newsweek International

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19887681/site/newsweek/

Thus begins the education of China's 137 million (and counting) Netizens into the ways of 3-D virtual worlds. With a launch planned for the end of the year, HiPiHi appears to be on track to becoming the first homegrown Chinese competitor to Second Life, the virtual world that's all the rage in the United States. HiPiHi's 38-year-old CEO and founder, Xu Hui, has ambitious goals: he plans to sign up 100,000 users in the first three months. Then he wants to branch out through partnerships with U.S., Japanese and other foreign firms to establish discrete virtual "continents." Ultimately, he sees a handful of virtual worlds, including HiPiHi and Second Life, linked up in one vast universe. "We're on the same road to a dream—virtual worlds are just beginning," says Xu.

Invisibility made possible, by mathematicians

Envision This: Mathematicians Design Invisible Tunnel

Call it Harry Potter's invisible sleeve. New calculations show how to make an electromagnetic "wormhole"—a tube that is invisible from the sides but allows light to shine down the center.

The concept is a twist on a spherical cloak of invisibility proposed last year. Such a device would be made of metamaterial, a thicket of metal rings or other shapes that bends light in funny ways. A hollow shell of metamaterial could in principle channel light around its inner space without slowing the light down, rendering that hidey-hole invisible to the outside world.

Science Journal (Almost) Polices the Blogosphere

If you blinked at any point over the last few days, you may have missed a minor scandal in the science blogosphere, pertaining to fair use of information from a scientific journal.
