La Peste della Psicoanalisi, in America (NYPS, USA), Working through the end of civilization

The New York Psychoanalytic Society is the oldest psychoanalytic organization in the United States. It was founded in 1911 by Dr. Abraham A. Brill and a small group of like-minded colleagues, who were excited by and committed to the revolutionary discoveries of Sigmund Freud and his students. Training in psychoanalysis was rather informal until 1931 when the Society established the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. It was the first psychoanalytic training center in the United States, and it has had a long and distinguished history. It was here that major advances in psychoanalytic theory and practice were made. The Institute was the professional home of many of the best known analysts of their time. These included Kurt Eissler, Heinz Hartmann, Ernst Kris, Rudolph Loewenstein, Charles Brenner, Margaret Mahler, and many others...

The analyst helps elucidate these for the patient, who refines, corrects, rejects, and adds further thoughts and feelings. During the years that an analysis takes place, the patient wrestles with these insights, going over them again and again with the analyst and experiencing them in daily life, in fantasies, and in dreams. Patient and analyst join in efforts not only to modify crippling life patterns and remove incapacitating symptoms, but also to expand the freedom to work and to love. Eventually the patient's life - his or her behavior, relationships, sense of self - changes in deep and abiding ways.

What is Psychoanalysis?

THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PSYCHOANALYSIS was founded in 1920 by Ernest Jones, under the direction of Sigmund Freud. It is a fully peer reviewed journal published six times a year (February, April, June, August, October and December) since its merger with The International Review of Psycho-Analysis in 1994. We now welcome contributions on

• Methodology
• Psychoanalytic Theory & Technique
• The History of Psychoanalysis
• Clinical Contributions
• Research and Life-Cycle Development
• Education & Professional Issues
• Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
• Interdisciplinary Studies (for example, applications to and from psychoanalysis and literature, social sciences, linguistics, philosophy and the arts)

The Journal also publishes the main papers and panel reports from the International Psychoanalytical Association's Congresses, book reviews, obituaries, and correspondence, including correspondence from the Bulletin Board attached to this World Wide Web site.

It is the only psychoanalytic journal regularly publishing extensive contributions by authors throughout the world - facilitated by a system of international editorial boards and the policy of allowing submission and review in all main European languages, followed by translation of accepted papers at the Journal's expense.

The Journal is available online. Click here to access the Journal via MetaPress, our online publisher.
