Hi all,
Philip just finished his keynote address at SLCC 2010, and during his talk
he discussed our future plans for Teen Second Life. Some time over the
coming months, we will be closing Teen Second Life as a standalone product,
while at the same time lowering the minimum age for the Main Grid to 16+
while we work on creating adequate solutions to serve the younger
demographic as well.
There is a tremendous amount of great work currently on the Teen Grid.
Incorporating this energy and innovation into the Main Grid in a safe,
secure way is very important to us, and we want to ensure that it is done
well.
There will be plenty of questions that come up regarding our decision, and I
want to establish a clear communication channel, and to ensure that the
educational community has someone to speak with. I will try to answer the
questions that I can in a timely fashion, and will have much ongoing
dialogue with the community around this topic. I will also be setting up
time inworld to discuss this with Teen Grid users, and will be in touch with
details around that.
I am Terrence Linden inworld, and my email address is terrence at lindenlab.com.
Please do not hesitate to reach out! I'm hear to listen and to help! I
look forward to speaking with you and, for some of you, meeting you for the
first time!
Best,
Terrence
On the eve of the Second Life Community Convention, here's a retro present for the community. While trying to generate some archival screen shots, Andrew and I managed to get a build running of Second Life circa August 2001. We called it "LindenWorld" back in those days. Here's a video showing what we looked like back then. I apologize in advance for the movie quality - I'm an engineer, not an artist, and I shot and narrated this in one take.
The goal of the Second Life Community Convention (SLCC) is to bring the many residents of the Second Life community together to network, build friendships and to discuss Second Life in a common forum. Since its inception, SLCC has been organized by the community for the community. All of the organizers and volunteers who plan and staff each year’s convention donate their time, expertise, skills and love of Second Life to create a great experience for attendees.
While we all value our experiences in the virtual world, SLCC allows us to meet each other in person, share meals together, learn from one another, and celebrate the abundant creativity that Second Life makes possible.
In the Beginning…
In the summer of 2005, a group of Second Life residents took a trip to San Francisco for a “real life invasion of Linden Lab” and during the course of the visit, an idea was born to invite more Second Life residents to attend a meet-n-greet at the State of Play III conference in October. Through conversations in the Second Life forums, it became clear that there was wide interest in such a real life meet-up, and the next two months were spent in a flurry of organizing, community meetings, and planning.
The 1st Annual Second Life Community Convention was held on October 8-9, 2005 in tandem with the State of Play III conference at the New York School of Law in New York City. Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale gave the keynote dressed as his Second Life avatar, and over 150 residents, Linden Lab employees, and other industry professionals attended the event. The founding resident organizers were Timothy Allen (SL: FlipperPA Peregrine), Jennifer Vatza (SL: Jennyfur Peregrine), Jerry Paffendorf (SL: SNOOPYbrown Zamboni), Laura van Hook (SL: Valadeza Anubis), and Ron Blechner (SL: Hiro Pendragon). Jeska Linden served as a liaison with Linden Lab and helped tremendously with the event.
It seemed that whatever he tried, nothing was working for Mark Kingdon. I like the guy – he’s genuinely a nice person, and he tried. But he was out of his depth when it came to balancing the needs of an online community with making it a successful and growing business.
1. SL Enterprise
Admittedly, this was a nugget that M Linden inherited. I saw immediately that it’d fail spectacularly, and lo-and-behold, it did. Companies have little to no need to fork out $50,000 on a grid when there are several cheaper and easier to use alternatives. This turned out a be a huge flop and the Linden team behind the project found themselves laid off.
2. Avaline
Next up in the line of completely useless services conjured up by the Lab was Avaline – the ability to call your avatar up from a real world phone line. Absolutely nobody could work out why this had any use whatsoever when we already had Skype. Another service hits the scrapheap.
3. XStreet SL
Snapping up XStreet SL was actually a nice bit of business by Linden Lab, but then they did what they did best and alienated the Second Life userbase. By forcing out the possibility to trade freebies on the marketplace (though I still support that idea) they angered a lot of retailers who promptly removed their goods in protest.
4. Zindra
Creating a red light district in Second Life was messy, confusing and created an alienation of the adult industry in SL. That’s not really a bad thing, and it stops kids from being able to access the naughty bits without verification, but I imagine it dented the income. Sex sells.
5. Viewer 2.0
As far as the monumental cock-ups go, this one takes some beating. I’ve harpered on for a couple of years on how Linden Lab needs to fix the first hour experience in order to retain new users registering for Second Life. Their solution was to create a viewer which not only confuses new users, but is vigorously opposed by long time residents too. Go figure, the team which worked on this project were laid off too.
6. SLim
An off-grid client which lets you communicate with friends in SL whilst on a computer which can’t handle the graphics is actually a good idea. Linden Lab somehow lost their way with this particular project though and it ended up in the wilderness.. like so many things seem to.
7. Search
There was a (now) infamous blogpost on how Linden Lab intended to make Second Life search more fair and remove the strong influence that traffic had. All they succeeded in doing in the new viewer was create the most impossible search I’ve ever seen in my life. Nevermind that is was extremely difficult to find anywhere, but then they hid the World Map. Finding your way around Second Life got considerably more difficult and as a result, the SL economy suffered.
8. Homesteads.
Hah. Hahahahaha. Hahaha. Hahahahaha. Hah.
9. Avatars United
M Linden always had this fascination about Facebook and how it grew to absurd numbers in such a short time. His purchase of Avatars United was an obvious reaction to this, and implementing it to make Second Life’s community stronger and more integrated between the 2D and 3D web. Yet again, nothing more has happened with this.
10. The Alphabet Linden
This was just more annoying than anything else. We get that you might not want to be found in SL Search so you can be bitched at, but picking out a single letter is a shocking way of going about it.
Philip Rosedale (Philip Linden in Second Life) è tornato! Non è più perennemente 'away', ma... quale sarà ora il suo avatar ?!?
Mark Kingdon steps down as CEO of Linden Lab, Philip Rosedale steps up as interim, SL7B under way and an artists exhibit causing controversy, Google Voice, vehicles in Entropia and more on this episode of MBC News.

This work is developed around the theme of this year for SL7B: “The unexpected collaborations.
The our interpretation show two residents of SL, that living in different places of the real world, meet their, know their, interact, until to establish a daily relationship of friendship and professional collaboration, that allowing them to implement projects of common interest.
The structure consists of three parts: in the two sides is show the two domestic environments in which the protagonists live, through the use of the network can access their second life.
The third, the middle one, is simply the immersive dimension (produced by Linden) where their dreams are realized building, expressing in this way their creativity.
The traditional tools of construction, that we all know, is the ‘trait d’union’ whereby who view the work implements the message in a way faster and more direct.

[2010/06/25 15:06] Ghost Ulich: Now let’s kick in with my today topic. The topic of my presentation is:
How to handle the help of residents (new and old) using a multi-lingual approach [2010/06/25 15:06] Ghost Ulich: Second Life is an international community. Why I say so? [2010/06/25 15:06] Ghost Ulich: Well, let me share with you some numbers: [2010/06/25 15:06] Ghost Ulich: • Over 60% of active residents are international (from other countries then the US) [2010/06/25 15:07] Ghost Ulich: • Almost 60% of user hours are international [2010/06/25 15:07] Ghost Ulich: • Over 60% of user-to-user transactions are international [2010/06/25 15:07] Ghost Ulich: in fact: Residents from the US accounted for 37% of User- to- User Transaction volume on a dollar basis, with Italy, Germany, France, the UK, and Japan rounding out the top 5 [2010/06/25 15:07] Ghost Ulich: still with me?
[2010/06/25 15:07] Ghost Ulich: good [2010/06/25 15:07] Ghost Ulich: • Over 60% of regions owned are international
• Almost 50% of mainlands owned are international [2010/06/25 15:08] Ghost Ulich: • Almost 50% of LindeX L$ Buys are international [2010/06/25 15:08] Ghost Ulich: and….. [2010/06/25 15:08] Ghost Ulich: • Residents from 187 countries did buy LindeX LS wootttt [2010/06/25 15:08] Ghost Ulich: Now regarding some resources: Residents can now enjoy secondlife.com in Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian–along with English, German, French, and Japanese. Seven different languages! [2010/06/25 15:08] Ghost Ulich: The Second Life Wiki is present at least in 18 different languages: [2010/06/25 15:09] Ghost Ulich: The Community Translation Project is the primary way that any Resident can contribute to the translations which are used in the Second Life software. Currently, at least 14 projects are ongoing [2010/06/25 15:09] Ghost Ulich: )) [2010/06/25 15:09] Ghost Ulich: at least …. [2010/06/25 15:09] Ghost Ulich: these are defective numbers people [2010/06/25 15:09] Ghost Ulich: since SL is a dynamic entity growing everyday [2010/06/25 15:10] Ghost Ulich: now…. [2010/06/25 15:10] Ghost Ulich: As some of you are aware, today we also have the chance to use translator huds that help us in managing international conversations At least 8 main translators are known (free and commercial) [2010/06/25 15:10] Ghost Ulich: but we all know some issues in using this approach…. [2010/06/25 15:11] Ghost Ulich: Known issues are: • Translators that will work in IM: actually there is a way but it is very buggy and causes the hud to stop working [2010/06/25 15:11] Ghost Ulich: • Be sure to test the HUD on your screen in ALL positions, since the position is a weakness (some huds are partially covered by the side or bottom of the screen). Sometimes you need to manually move the HUD around
[2010/06/25 15:11] Ghost Ulich: • Some versions do not display your current language selections and do not work in no-script areas [2010/06/25 15:11] Ghost Ulich: • Not addressing all languages [2010/06/25 15:11] Ghost Ulich: /me is breathing…. [2010/06/25 15:11] Ghost Ulich: his information highlights the following: • SL is composed of a large community of international users • Even if we do have some resources we still need a human approach or more likely an one-on-one approach. [2010/06/25 15:12] Ghost Ulich: This is one of the reasons why we created Phoenix Wave Team (PWT). [2010/06/25 15:12] Ghost Ulich: !!! [2010/06/25 15:12] Ghost Ulich: PWT is comprised of an international group of skilled mentors who are dedicated to sharing their knowledge in a helpful and friendly manner. [2010/06/25 15:12] Ghost Ulich: We offer one-on-one individualized information for new/old residents. Our classes range from basics to advanced level, events, and resources that are free and available to all [2010/06/25 15:12] Ghost Ulich: now…. [2010/06/25 15:12] Ghost Ulich: stay wit more few more minutes… [2010/06/25 15:12] Ghost Ulich: )) [2010/06/25 15:13] Ghost Ulich: Currently, we cover at least 15 languages:
[2010/06/25 15:13] Ghost Ulich: Arabic, English, Filipino, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish [2010/06/25 15:13] Ghost Ulich: and speaking of unexpected collaborations…… [2010/06/25 15:13] Ghost Ulich: The fact that we have copartners such as SL Ajuda Brasil (for the … Mostra tuttoPortuguese) and Moonlight University (for Italian) is only one of our treasures that we have inside our group. [2010/06/25 15:13] Ghost Ulich: YAY [2010/06/25 15:14] Ghost Ulich: Our philosophy of multilingual mentoring way is to help using not only commonly available tools (same I already mentioned before) but mostly our expertise and the capacity to speak different languages. [2010/06/25 15:14] Ghost Ulich: While English is the international language, we cannot forget that there are residents that are non-English speaking and still need our help. [2010/06/25 15:14] Ghost Ulich: /me is breathing again….. [2010/06/25 15:14] Treacle Darlandes: ) [2010/06/25 15:14] Papol Heron: lol [2010/06/25 15:14] Tourmaline Falken: no breathing allowed Ghost [2010/06/25 15:15] Ghost Ulich: we all are here to help and we are proud to be part of the family of RHN mentors…. [2010/06/25 15:15] Ghost Ulich: if you want to know more of us… [2010/06/25 15:15] Ghost Ulich: please stop the Phoenix Wave Team booth for more info: [2010/06/25 15:15] Ghost Ulich: http://slurl.com/secondlife/SL7B%20Unique/117/195/22 If you want to know more about PWT, this is our website: www.pwmentors.com [2010/06/25 15:15] Ghost Ulich: !!!
On June 23, 2009, Second Life turns 6 years old. Hey! This is your second half-decade! Now you’re *so* much more sophisticated than 5, but still hovering near the oven, anxious to devour the cake, and wondering what 6 has in store for you. Or, for that matter, what about 7? 10? 15? Where do the years go, anyway?
Since you’re never content with things as they are, the event this year is a challenge to Residents: show how you intend to make things in 5, 10 or 100 years. The Birthday theme this year is The Future of Virtual Worlds and we’re betting you have some pretty awesome visions to share of the future you’re building here. How will Virtual Worlds work? How will they look? How will they be part of everyday life? How will we learn, socialize and evolve in them? How will they affect your beliefs, and be affected by your actions?
Once again, Linden Lab has set aside 20 regions for the Birthday celebration, and Residents are building their particular future to share with you. The event infrastructure is nearly complete, and it looks great. It’s a little dark, and a little shiny. It’s a little inspiring, and a little dystopian. It’s decidedly 3- dimensional. Think in light. Think in concept. Look up. Look under. Look in and listen closely.
Applications to build an exhibit are now closed. We will be reviewing all submitted applications next, and hope to have announcements going out to accepted exhibitors by June 1. Exhibitors will have a full 2 or 3 weeks on-site to build. The event will open June 23, and officially run for a week, (though we will keep the gates open for a week beyond that so that plenty of people can come by for a visit).
The installation we have created for SL6B. The Future of Virtual Worlds represents some hypothetical use cases for virtual environments in 2024.
My choice of year 2024 as “the future” originates from the reflection that a 15-years’ time span would be long enough, allowing for substantial technological transformations, but sufficiently short for us to make fairly plausible predictions.
Assuming that no apocalypse(s) intervene in the meantime, in 2024 virtual worlds will be a multimedia space that can be universally accessed from the existing global communication networks by means of wide-spread and easy-to-use devices.
