Second Life turns 6 years old. SL6B, June 23 — June 29, 2009. Virtual Worlds in 2024

Second Life turns 6 years old. SL6B, June 23 — June 29, 2009

Announcing SL6B, June 23 — June 29, 2009

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/SL6B

On June 23, 2009, Second Life turns 6 years old. Hey! This is your second half-decade! Now you’re *so* much more sophisticated than 5, but still hovering near the oven, anxious to devour the cake, and wondering what 6 has in store for you. Or, for that matter, what about 7? 10? 15? Where do the years go, anyway?

Since you’re never content with things as they are, the event this year is a challenge to Residents: show how you intend to make things in 5, 10 or 100 years. The Birthday theme this year is The Future of Virtual Worlds and we’re betting you have some pretty awesome visions to share of the future you’re building here. How will Virtual Worlds work? How will they look? How will they be part of everyday life? How will we learn, socialize and evolve in them? How will they affect your beliefs, and be affected by your actions?

Image:SL6BFINALLOGOcr.jpg

Once again, Linden Lab has set aside 20 regions for the Birthday celebration, and Residents are building their particular future to share with you. The event infrastructure is nearly complete, and it looks great. It’s a little dark, and a little shiny. It’s a little inspiring, and a little dystopian. It’s decidedly 3- dimensional. Think in light. Think in concept. Look up. Look under. Look in and listen closely.

Applications to build an exhibit are now closed. We will be reviewing all submitted applications next, and hope to have announcements going out to accepted exhibitors by June 1. Exhibitors will have a full 2 or 3 weeks on-site to build. The event will open June 23, and officially run for a week, (though we will keep the gates open for a week beyond that so that plenty of people can come by for a visit).

Our vision for Virtual Environments in Year 2024 [English version] 2024

Opensource Obscure

Virtual Worlds in 2024
http://slurl.com/secondlife/SL6B Void/111/73/22
opening:
June 23 – 10am SLT

The installation we have created for SL6B. The Future of Virtual Worlds represents some hypothetical use cases for virtual environments in 2024.

My choice of year 2024 as “the future” originates from the reflection that a 15-years’ time span would be long enough, allowing for substantial technological transformations, but sufficiently short for us to make fairly plausible predictions.

Assuming that no apocalypse(s) intervene in the meantime, in 2024 virtual worlds will be a multimedia space that can be universally accessed from the existing global communication networks by means of wide-spread and easy-to-use devices.

How to engage the students in learning, with the web 2.0 tools and in Second Life, by John Miller

Creating Engaging and Interactive Online Nursing, Medical, and other Courses

http://jsvavoom.blogspot.com/2008/11/creating-online-nursing-medical-and.html

.fullpost{display:inline;}
For my college courses, I use Articulate Presenter, Crossword Compiler, and Jeopardy to engage the students in learning with games, as well as to provide slides with audio. The web 2.0 tools besides a learning management system (Blackboard, Angel) include Google Calendar, Docs, Talk, Sites, Video Chat, Blogger, del.icio.us, Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Skype, ooVoo, Camtasia and others.

The virtual world of Second Life is extensively used for constructivism activities using Archipelis and tools in world. Community in the online world is encouraged with avatar creation, in world classes, and field trips to events in Second Life. Animations are imported into Second Life with Poser, sounds with Audacity, and images with Gimp or Photoshop. Students interact with virtual patients, making critical decisions for assessment, communication and treatment. Support groups in Second Life are numerous and interaction with them is critical for understanding the complexities for those accessing the medical system with major and long term health issues. Virtual Ability and SL Healthy have more information about these activities.

My teaching career has spanned 27 years in nursing, with more than eight years teaching online. For five years I was the faculty trainer for all disciplines in online teaching at a college.

If you need assistance in creating interactive and engaging online courses for nursing, other medical areas, or other disciplines, contact me at http://muvers.org.
