I'm attending a SL Community College group meeting. The focus of the meeting is a demonstration of the NESIM nursing education simulation. There's a group of about 10-15 folks; we all teleported to NEWG for a demonstration by JS Vavoom. He teaches Nurs Emergency Room Simulator is based on industry standard simulations: METI and Laerdal. Jon indicates that it's a few hours of learning curve for SL engagement. Orientation of 54 learners to Second Life was a challenge. Interesting thing - they've "given Lindens to students" in addition to the orientation matierals. Once the patient lies on the table, the monitors turn on. Instructor and student have control over the system via the HUDs - patient/instructor and nurse/learner. With the patient on the table, Jon increased the oxygen via the tank. In this simulation, the patient reported and pointed to chest pains; as the instructor, Jon changed the heart rhythm, and as the student, he started an IV, administered a lidocaine in The simulation - patient responses to learner/nurse actions - is mostly controlled by the instructor; at some later point, there will be scenarios scripted with automated responses. GeoGlobe

One of the wonderful things about Second Life is that in many ways it works just like real life. Daden was working on the DataGlobe when its Second Life neighbour, Hayduke Ebisu (this is his Second Life name, and he is based in the USA), who is active in environmental issues in Second Life and real life, saw what the group was doing. He said that he had someone that Daden should meet. That person was Stephane Zugzwang (another Second Life name, and based in France). (Second Life is very much about social networking and collaboration [4]) Stephane had built a 'VR Room' in Second Life. This is similar to the 720 degree 'bubble photos' that are sometimes found on the Web, where one can pan and zoom in all directions. In the Second Life version, the photo is pasted onto the inside of a huge 20 m sphere, with the viewer's avatar standing inside and looking at the image all around her/him.We all saw the potential to combine DataGlobe and VR Rooms. The resulting system was christened GeoGlobe (Figure 10[26]). GeoGlobe again shares the same NewsGlobe engine; all that changes is the final display UI (user interface). When a feed is selected the "points" of the feed fly out from a generator at the centre of the hollow sphere and "stick" to the map on the sphere wall at their correct locations. GeoGlobe also allows users to display multiple datasets, each in a different colour.

Tuscany island is one of aHead's most sophisticated real life recreation tasks. Comissioned by a private investor from Italy - Mr. Lee Pau, the Tuscany I sim is a part of a much bigger project called Mare Nostrum. Mare Nostrum will be a set of islands reflecting the mediterranean landscape of Italy. Tuscany is one of the leading sims in this project.


The whole island is landscaped and textured with maximum care, to reflect the unique ambience of the real Tuscany. Within the island one can find places resambling Tuscanian countryside, village, castle ruins, luxury historic villas, even a part of an old railroad system with a steam engine. The most important build on this island is based on the famous Villa Mangiacane hotel.

I just got back from visiting the new exhibit in Second Life put up by the Alzheimer’s organization in Ontario. Like Camp Darfur, there is a lot going on here - this is a wonderful example of how you can build a “cross-border” (those borders being the real and the virtual) exhibit.

The entrance is what you’d normally see in the real world - a physical building with a doorway. It’s interesting to me that most everything we’ve seen so far in SL is a direct copy of the real world. The oddest of those is classrooms/seminar areas that have seats… why would my avatar need to sit? In any case, once you go into the exhibit, you’ll learn about the organization and read some very sad stories of those affected by the disease.

The builder’s did a good job in building displays that are engaging by having wonderful photos (all of them have attached notecards for more information).

I think however, what I loved the most was “The Memory Board” game. There’s nothing special about the game itself - what I loved was that it existed as part of this exhibit. It would have been too easy to throw up some photos and info and call it a day… but they went that extra step to build interactivity in. It’s a huge bonus that the game ties so nicely into the message/mission. I’m only mad that I didn’t get the high score!

Given all the recent yay/nay sayers floating around (Clay Shirkey’s piece started a firestorm of blog posts and comments here, here, here and here) I think that this exhibit gives us a very small glimpse into the vast potential of virtual worlds.

For the record, I’m a huge proponent and believer in virtual worlds - but am just as curious to see if Linden Labs can survive being a pioneer as there seems to be some new players on the scene.

First in Second Life

On Thursday, December 14, more than 60 visitors from around the world attended the gala opening of Remember Us, a photo exhibit organized by the Alzheimer Society of Ontario (ASO) — without leaving the comfort of their home. That’s because the exhibit took place in Second Life, a virtual 3D world, where you can create a digital version of yourself (or ‘avatar’), and walk, talk or even fly.

Remember Us is the joint effort of the Alzheimer Society of Ontario and the Second Life Library 2.0, and was created by curator Shadow Fugazi, who in real life is Kristina Lively, a Washington, DC, librarian, and Medium Helvetic, otherwise known as Wayne MacPhail, an emerging media consultant from Hamilton, Ontario. “Le demenziali minacce di Silvio Berlusconi ( oggi quella di una marcia su Roma di milioni di persone ove il Capo dello Stato non cedesse al ricatto di sciogliere immediatamente le Camere, e di indire “elezioni” con una Legge “Acerbo” - 1923) non vanno più assolutamente tollerate.

Il Signore sembra ritenere che al Quirinale vi sia un altro Vittorio Emanuele III e un Facta collettivo al Governo.

La tempra morale dell’oligarchia al potere che, pressoché unanime, ha di recente “nominato” un Senato della Repubblica opposto a quello legittimamente eletto, e’ in effetti vicina per molti aspetti a quella dell’Italia del 1922, oggi prodotto di un regime fondato sul furto e la dissipazione di legalità e di moralità che sommerge l’Italia con valanghe di spazzatura fascista, comunista, contro-conciliare, rottamata con il danaro tolto ad un popolo immiserito, avendolo indebitato, ipotecato, in modo insostenibile, per generazioni e generazioni italiane.

Il Signore suddetto ha d’altra parte già compiuto esperimenti probanti: ha mostrato di potere, con l’uso militare, cileno dei camionisti, paralizzare in un baleno la vita del Paese e ha cadaveri nell’armadio, suoi o ereditati dal migliore piduismo del secolo scorso.

Tutto questo grazie (o malgrado?) a un Parlamento che ha dato alla Camera una forte maggioranza al Governo, e un Senato dove solo la piu’ oscena convergenza della maggioranza che ha a suo tempo espresso le massime autorità dello Stato con la minoranza di allora e di oggi, ha potuto inchiodarlo ad una operazione di alto tradimento della Costituzione, della legalità, della democrazia.

Silvio Berlusconi e i suoi comunisti – oggi – sanno benissimo che questo Parlamento potrebbe in brevissimo tempo, in poche settimane, esprimere una saldissima maggioranza di almeno il 70% a sostengo di un Governo di radicalità riformatrice, quale auspicata ormai da quasi tutte le istituzioni economiche internazionali e da forze storiche italiane liberaldemocratiche, ieri contrapposte, oggi le migliori espressioni della storia moderata, radicale, socialista e comunista, del nostro Paese.

La jattanza di Berlusconi è oggi sostenuta da fascine sfasciate di residuati senz’anima del fallimento del regime partitocratrico, e dal “nuovo” sfascismo populista e antiliberale che si aggrega, come un tempo, con il percorso “da Sinistra a Destra”.

Se di già fossimo a questo punto, e Berlusconi avesse ragione nell’analisi della situazione, non attenderemmo d’esser incarcerati o arsi. Abbiamo preparato per il 2008 il primo “Grande Satyagraha mondiale per la Pace, la Giustizia e la Libertà.

L’alternativa al talibanismo sfascista vivrà e sarà rilanciato dalla resistenza organizzata nel e dal Partito Radicale Nonviolento, Transnazionale e Transpartito: Federalista con quattro nomi iscritti sulle sue bandiere: Gandhi, certo. Ma ancora: Martin Luther King, Karl Popper ed Emanuele Kant.

Due follie sono e saranno così a confronto: quella che passa attraverso lo scioglimento (Concordato!!!) delle Camere e vecchie elezioni (1923/24); e quella oggi rinata che vide la luce con l’Europa occupata per metà dal nazismo e per l’altra metà dal comunismo e due carcerati a Ventotene, che – come Ciro il Grande – furono costruttori di nuovi Stati costruiti con le rovine dei precedenti: la patria europea con l’esplicito annuncio della patria planetaria, quella che intanto già comincia a vagire, mettendo ora in mora lo Stato-Caino, avendo di già creato l’embrione della giurisdizione planetaria, oggi in grave sofferenza, ma finalmente diagnosticabile, malgrado i crociati vaticani della Legge 40”.

P.S.: Leggiamo ora che la C.E. (Controconciliare) I. “auspica” un “Governo di scopo antimaggioritario” … Comprensibilmente si sono così autoinvitati alle consultazioni del Capo dello Stato, per sostituire anche formalmente, i radicali assenti per “non collaborazione”, primo gradino del percorso della nonviolenza contro il “pericolo Facta” in vista della Marcia su Roma di milioni di… squadristi berluscones :-).

Pannella: la legalità è totalmente negata. Oltre che milioni di squadristi, si annunciano una quarantina di quadrumviri…

Con la lunga intervista a Giuliano Ferrara in apertura del Tg1 delle ore 20 (Il video di Ferrara al Tg1), subito dopo l’intervista a Berlusconi, c’è semplicemente da chiedersi se l’ipotesi di una Marcia su Roma di milioni di persone, di un’alleanza torbida oltre che anti-istituzionale e anti-costituzionale, sia sul punto di esplodere.

La legalità è totalmente negata e con jattanza, oltre che milioni di squadristi, si annunciano una quarantina - non più quattro - di quadrumviri. L’Autorità garante e il partito Rai Tv garantiscono la stessa composizione della maggioranza del periodo 1922 - 1924 - 1929 e seguenti, fino a Salò.

Parlo a mio figlio della storia del Carnevale, il Carrus Navalis, celebrato in onore di iside dagli antichi Egizi, divenuto poi cerimonia di quella Repubblica di Venezia che per secoli non solo trasmise la memoria dai Tempi Antichi ai giorni nostri, ma difese, spesso isolata, le libertà individuali, la tolleranza tra religioni e filosofie, gli ebrei... anche

Perchè invece la generazione dei miei padri e dei nonni di mio figlio no.

E la macchia vergognosa delle leggi razziali si proietta ancora oggi sui 'giorni nostri', sul modo di vivere, di fare politica, interna e nel mondo globale, sul modo di rappresentarci a noi stessi chi siamo, chi eravamo, chi eravamo diventati tra il 1922 e il 1945

Uno specchio rotto, fascisti di comodo o perchè tali nati degli anni '30, nazi-fascisti del triennio di Salò, pseudo antifascisti, veri antifascisti, doppiogiochisti (anche a fin di bene, come i giusti che salvarono gli ebrei dalle deportazioni e dalle camere a gas), partigiani di una Resistenza vittoriosa, ma solo grazie agli Alleati anglo-americani, pseudopartigiani diventati tali dopo il 25 aprile 1945, o poco prima, e invece, a conti fatti e memoria ristabilita, fascisti con ruoli anche importanti di un regime cui avevano pienamente collaborato, anche per la propaganda delle leggi razziali.

La Resistenza di pochi, pochissimi, e il sacrificio delle vittime, della guerra, e della Shoah, hanno fatto finta di lavare le nostre coscienze, lasciandole candide e immacolate

con una memoria vuota, assente, un buco nero della nostra Storia, di oggi, non di ieri, che rischia di ingoiarci tutti, se la terza generazione, quella dei bimbi e dei giovanissimi di oggi non riuscirà a rappresentare per intero, e non più come uno specchio rotto, la nostra Storia, e le storie di ciascuno di noi.
