Network Neutrality

Network neutrality (equivalently “net neutrality”, “Internet neutrality” or “NN”) refers to a principle that is applied to residential broadband networks, and potentially to all networks. Precise definitions vary, but a broadband network free of restrictions on the kinds of equipment attached and the modes of communication allowed would be considered neutral by most advocates, provided it met additional tests relating to the degradation of various communication streams by others.

Big phone and cable companies are trying to get rid of Network Neutrality, the fundamental principle that prevents them from discriminating against your favorite Web sites and services.

And Second Life - even in its present form - is a potentially significant development platform, not to mention a business opportunity to drive demand for internet infrastructure, processing power, memory capacity, software, gaming, and the like. I don't even want to consider the implications for pornography.

Not only is imitation the sincerest form of flattery, it's also a primary mechanism for the advancement of human civilization. Second Life may have a long way to go to fulfill its hype, but as the first baby steps toward imitating the real world in cyberspace, it demands close attention. After all, that's how we humans learn...

Linux quasi come Windows, con Ubuntu, ma ora ancora meglio con PCLinuxOS

PCLinuxOS 2007, meglio di Ubuntu ?

Per caso, dopo mesi di ubuntiani aggiornamenti, ho dato un’occhiata al sito distrowatch.com, ed ho scoperto che PCLinuxOS era in rapida ascesa, al secondo posto subito dopo Ubuntu.

Mi sono chiesto il perchè (con Ubuntu mi trovo bene, funziona, ma ad ogni aggiornamento diventa sempre più pesante e più lento).

Mi sono detto: provo questo PCLinuxOS 2007

e infatti, in un colpo solo mi riconosce TUTTO del mio PC, compresa la scheda grafica, e con solo un paio di veloci aggiustamenti mi fa anche viaggiare velocissimo su Second Life, meglio di Windows!

Non ho ancora trovato difetti, per cui lo consiglio a chi vuole provare.

Non sono cambiati gli ambienti, i temi su cui vale la pena di visitare Centro Mimir SL e di discutere.

In uno spazio più piccolo, circa 8.000 metri quadri, c’è tutto quel che serve, e anche di più!

La Casa degli Psicoanalisti, che ospita libri, audio e video da Freud a Lacan, si è ingrandita per potercisi muovere con maggiore agio all’interno.

Sono aumentati i micro spazi denominati Mimir Village, per avere la possibilià di ascoltare radio diverse, ora anche una spagnola (tango!) e una portoghese.

Si è aggiunto uno Spazio Libertario, dove si puo’ ascoltare http://radio-libertaire.org:8080/radiolib .
